Adverts book

Our original plan was to have the new adverts book as b/w with full colour inserts. However, because we have too many colour pictures, the price was just too expensive - one quote we had was £42 per copy! Obviously this is too expensive, so we are opting for an all b/w interior to save on costs.

As a result, we have made a 36-page, full colour, comic book size, booklet, as a taster, which has no writing in it, but instead has adverts and promotions in full colour on every page. This costs £5.49 plus postage direct from lulu.com:

The new book is now nearing completion and will have over 300 pages of exciting adverts, promotions and rare photos, in themed chapters.

Men o' War Tent

At the meeting on 17th December of the Men o' War Tent Big Business will be shown, which is traditional at that time of year. The remainder of the programme is being voted on by members, who can select their favourite movies for this Christmas show. The meeting, as always, will be at the Manifest Theatre in Manningtree, Essex, and doors open at 7.30pm.

Letters from Stan

I've been away in Europe and while I was gone have discovered that The Stan Laurel Correspondence Archive Project (www.lettersfromstan.com) has logged its 100,000th guest! 100,805 at last count! Thanks to everyone for their support and kind thoughts. I could not be more pleased with the reaction to my "labor of love".

Desert Sons are back in business

Wigan's Sons of the Desert are back from the wilderness! Local fans of comedy legends Laurel and Hardy will be delighted to learn that the man whose resignation from the appreciation society's borough branch caused its collapse has decided to return to office.

Taxi driver Gary Winstanley is already making plans to resume monthly meetings at Poolstock's Honeysuckle pub. And he is now looking further ahead to September next year and what will be Wigan's 20th annual Laurel and HarDay.

The 19th was rescued at the 11th hour last month by a Widnes branch chairman and staged at Bryn Labour Club. Only weeks earlier local Sons had been resigned to travelling further afield for their entertainment and get-togethers because Gary's stepping down as Grand Sheik of Wigan's Dirty Work tent (branch) had dominoed into complete closure. But after family commitments became less troublesome and his enthusiasm was refired by visiting the Laurel and HarDay, he was bitten by the bug again.

He said: "I had been involved in the Sons for 20 years before resigning. It's not something you give up easily. And so after a few months I realised I was missing it badly. I have had a talk with some of my friends and running events in future is going to be very much a team effort with no one person in charge."

The meetings feature expert talks, games and of course screenings of the popular duo's films. Sons meetings generally begin at 8pm and all are welcome (so that includes Daughters too).
