2014 International Convention to come to the UK?

I am delighted to announce that the Bacon Grabbers Tent, on behalf of a partnership of UK tents, is bidding for the 2014 Sons Of The Desert International Convention to come to the UK. Neither Norman nor myself can afford to go to the USA this year as economic austerity bites. I had been planning a bid for the 2014, but I had resigned myself to going to the 2014 Convention in, I presumed, the USA, and bidding for 2016 instead. But circumstances change and Roger Robinson and Dave Simpson will be in Manchester, USA, for the 2012 Convention and they have agreed to present our bid, based around the Cumbria Grand. In 1984 the International Convention was a joint event between Bill Cubin's Berth Marks Tent and Helpmates, and part of the Convention was held at the Cumbria Grand. In 1998 Birmingham's Laughing Gravy Tent hosted the International Convention and an evening was spent at the Cumbria Grand before returning to Birmingham by coach. So 30 years on from Bill Cubin's event, we hope to return to the area where Stan was born, as part of our Stan Laurel Trail.

Of course it is not just a matter of winning the bid. It is vital to offer our international visitors a great time, so they are determined to make the effort to come. If they come for just the Convention, or the Pre-convention as well, or the Pre-pre-convention as well, they will have a fantastic time. Our theme is the Stan Laurel Trail, many bits of which will include places where Babe also visited.

Gary Russeth

Most Sons know that fellow Son Gary Russeth was diagnosed with cancer and underwent an operation some months ago, followed by chemotherapy. Since then, additional cancer was found and new chemo treatments started. Gary has had, and continues to have, a very rough time. His family has set up a website at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/garyrusseth, where they can provide friends and family updates about Gary, and allow friends and family to post messages to Gary. It would be nice if Sons around the world post something for Gary to help him keep up his spirits. Gary and his wife, Jean, moved to Harlem some years ago because of their love of Laurel and Hardy. They've done an amazing job of helping, volunteering, and supporting the Laurel and Hardy Museum of Harlem, Georgia - the success of that museum is as much the result of their efforts as of anyone I know. I've known Gary for many years and you'll never meet anyone as dedicated to the Boys as he is. Above is a photo that shows Gary in a car pulling a calliope (he owns both), in the Oliver Hardy Festival Parade in October 2009. He is also the Grand Sheik of the Berth Marks Tent of Harlem. Jean is asking for everyone's prayers.

These collectible talking golf head covers are crafted out of moulded PVC with lifelike detail and were listed at $4.50. Too bad that they are out of stock and that the site has not been updated since 2004.

Collectables on sale

I am selling out some of my Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy collectables. Please check out on eBay. I am selling the following collection...

In 1966 I went to visit Mrs Eda Laurel in Santa Monica, California and I have an ash tray and a water glass from the Oceana Apt Hotel with their name on it. I am also selling my collection of Laurel and Hardy glasses and beer or coffee glasses. On all the glasses there are pictures of Laurel and Hardy from their films. These glasses came out around 1960. All excellent. I am also selling all my Laurel and Hardy 17 laser disc collection and all are excellent.

Silence is Golden - Scotland's Only Silent Film Festival Honours 100-year-old Cinema

Scotland's only silent movie festival is returning to the country's oldest purpose-built cinema in March this year when the beautifully restored Hippodrome in Bo'ness will be the first cinema in Scotland to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Following the success of the 2011 Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema, Scotland's original picture palace will host another weekend of classic and rare silent films with live musical accompaniment by internationally renowned performers. This year's programme will feature Scottish premieres, new restorations and specially commissioned events and workshops to celebrate the Hippodrome's place within Scotland's great tradition of cinema-going.

The full programme for The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema will be announced at the cinema on Tuesday 7th February 2012 at 10:00 hrs. The Festival will run from Friday 16th March to Sunday 18th March and feature the movies of silent era stars such as Harold Lloyd, Douglas Fairbanks, Laurel and Hardy as well as an Opening Night Gala film that surely inspired the new silent film sensation The Artist.
